Supply Characterization of Hydro-geothermal Resources in the Western U.s

چکیده
Efforts to characterize geothermal supply have long been focused on the aspect of power generation [Petty, et al., 1992], [Petty, et al., 2007], and [Augustine, et al., 2010]. This paper focuses on an approach to characterize the supply curve of hydrogeothermal energy that can be used for direct use in the United States. It aims to compensate for the absence of research on thermal uses and provides a levelized cost estimation of geothermal direct utilization, especially district heating. A cost model for geothermal district heating projects, which is a function of geothermal gradient and population density, is developed. The model calculates the levelized cost, the capital cost, as well as the operation and maintenance cost. As expected, the resulting supply curve indicates that economicallyviable sites for geothermal district heating are concentrated in western U.S. It also demonstrates that high geothermal gradient and high population density could significantly lower the levelized costs of directuse geothermal. The paper provides a procedure for future supply characterization research of EGS resources.

The geothermal supply curve analysis undertaken in this study estimates the supply of electricity generation potential from geothermal resources in the United States and the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), capital costs, and operating and maintenance costs associated with developing these geothermal resourc...
متن کاملThe Economic and Environmental Position of Geothermal Technologies in Iran’s Power Supply Portfolio from Policy and Investment Perspectives
In this study, the idea of utilizing hydrothermal technologies in the power supply portfolio is explored considering the necessity of power security, environmental protection, supplying the ever-growing power demand, and the opportunity to export hydrocarbon resources. The main goal is to determine a minimum guaranteed purchase price from a policy perspective and a confidence interval for sensi...
متن کاملThe Status and Future of Geothermal Electric Power
Geothermal electricity production in the United States began in 1960. Today there are over 20 plants in the western United States providing a total of about 2,200 MW of clean and reliable electricity. Currently identified resources could provide over 20,000 MW of power in the U.S., and undiscovered resources might provide 5 times that amount. In the 1990s industry growth slowed due to the loss ...
متن کاملReducing the U.S dependency on oil and gas imports, implications for its policies in the international system
This paper aims to firstly explain the significance of the U.S oil independency and its consequences on the U.S foreign strategy in international politics. Secondly, the implications of this energy policy on the U.S foreign policy in the international system context is examined. The hypothesis to address these inquiries is postulated using neo-realism theory. Accordingly, following oil independ...
متن کاملUpdated Supply Characterization of Geothermal District Heating and Cooling Application in United States
This paper is an update of an earlier supply analysis, He, et al., (2013), of low-temperature utilization of geothermal resources using geothermal district heating and cooling systems. Along with the use of identified hydrothermal resources, it updates the supply curve for direct-use utilization using undiscovered hydrothermal resources and near-hydrothermal EGS resources. It also incorporates ...
